Online Drilling Skills for Geologists Certificate Program

This certificate program aims to improve the geologist's understanding of the fundamental processes that are involved in drilling boreholes and therefore to improve their effectiveness in identifying the source of problems and managing a drilling project.

The program also examines fundamental aspects of the use and application of drilling fluids and the principles of borehole surveying. A course on economic aspects focusses on the major cost drivers and the structure of drilling contracts.

This program is made up of 9 courses, presented online, and consists of self-directed learning, as well as support sessions for each course.

Online Exploration Safety Officer Certificate Program

The aim of this certificate is to improve the candidate's level of understanding of health and safety issues on an operational drill site so that the candidate can more effectively assist in the management of safety aspects of a drill site.

It is not possible to identify and mitigate risk in a drilling operation if one does not have at least a fundamental understanding of the processes involved in drilling and so this certificate includes the Drilling Fundamentals and Introduction to Drilling Methods courses. The Fundamentals of Risk Assessment course prepares candidates to conduct a basic issue-based risk assessment while the Fundamentals of Hazard Identification course will equip candidates with an understanding of the major sources of hazards on a drill site and therefore improve their ability to identify hazards on a drill site.

The Legal Aspects of Exploration Drilling (SA Law) course covers aspects of South African law applicable to drilling operations and so is intended for people working on projects where South African law is applicable.

Online Exploration Supervisor Certificate Program

The supervisor is arguably the most important person in a drilling operation and the knowledge, skills, experience and attitude of the supervisor directly impacts every aspect of the operation but particularly health and safety performance.
Supervisor training programs are normally focused only on supervisory skills and so this certificate has been developed specifically to deepen the supervisor’s technical and legal knowledge, skills and understanding so that he / she can more effectively manage the safety and productivity aspects of an operational drill site.

GSSA DRILLING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES in resource exploration

Frequently, new geologists are placed on drilling projects with very little understanding of the drilling operation. In order to effectively contribute to managing the project, geologists require at least a basic level of understanding of drilling principles and the drilling operation as a whole.

This course, provided by Colin Rice, will provide newly qualified geologists, that have had little or no exposure to drilling operations, with a fundamental understanding of selected aspects of a drilling operation.

The course is a combination of online, self-directed learning and virtual contact sessions where concepts can be discussed and clarified, questions can be answered, and practical applications of the concepts can be discussed. Delegates will have access to a discussion forum, printable notes in pdf format and support sessions throughout the course.

This course has 4 x half day virtual contact sessions which will be presented on 9, 16, 23 February and 2 March 2021.
